Getty Villa Guide

What is Getty Villa?

Getty Villa is a museum in Malibu, California, that focuses on art and culture from the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan periods. The museum is located at the site of the Villa dei Papiri, an archaeological site that was discovered in 1748.

The museum was built to house the Getty Collection of Antiquities, which includes more than 44,000 artifacts from the Greek, Roman, and Etruscan civilizations.

It is famous for its extensive collection of Roman antiquities, and its gardens, which were designed to recreate the atmosphere of a Roman villa.

The museum is open to the public everyday, except Tuesday, and admission is free. Try to visit in the morning to avoid the crowds. When you visit Malibu, Getty Villa is a must-see!

You can explore the museum at your own pace, or take a guided tour. The museum has a cafe, a bookstore, and a gift shop. Don’t worry about getting lost- there are maps available throughout the museum.

Getty Villa also has a number of gardens and fountains, including the Central Court Fountain, the East Garden Fountain, and the Villa Garden Fountain. You can stroll through the gardens and take in the peaceful atmosphere, or sit and relax for a while.

Relaxing in the gardens is a great way to spend an afternoon at Getty Villa. Just be sure about the opening and closing times of the gardens before you go, so you don’t get caught out in the dark!

How can I get to the Getty Villa?

The Getty Villa is located at 17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272. There is no public parking at the Getty Villa, but there are several public transportation options.

The Getty Villa is accessible through a number of Metro Bus lines that stop at the Pacific Palisades Transit Center, which is a short walk from the Villa.

There is also a complimentary shuttle from the Metro Gold Line station at 17th Street/Sierra Madre Villa. There is a small parking lot at the bottom of the hill for those who wish to walk up, but it fills up quickly. So, getting there early is advised.

Also, be aware that the Getty Villa is closed on Tuesdays. So, you will need to plan your visit accordingly.

You can prepare for your visit to the Getty Villa by downloading the free Getty Villa App, which is available for both iOS and Android devices. The app will give you an audio tour of the museum as well as a map to help you navigate your way around the grounds.

When is the best time to visit Getty Villa?

The best time to visit Getty Villa is from June to August when you can fully enjoy the outdoors. If you plan to spend time visiting the museums in Getty Villa, plan your trip for a weekday as the weekend crowds can be overwhelming.

Visiting a museum on a weekday will also save you some money as many museums offer reduced admission fees on weekdays. Better weather can also be expected in the summer months.

With that being said, the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) can also be a great time to visit Getty Villa. The weather is still pleasant and the crowds are not as bad as they are in the summer.

Don’t forget to check the Getty Villa event calendar before you go as there are often special exhibitions and events happening throughout the year.

How long should I spend at Getty Villa?

Getty Villa is huge! A lot of visitors spend several hours visiting all the various areas and exhibitions, but you can easily spend a couple of hours here. There are many different things to see and do, so plan to spend some time here if you want to see everything.

If you’re only visiting the museum and gardens, you can plan to spend about two hours at Getty Villa. But if you’re planning to spend time at the Getty Center as well, give yourself a full day.

You can take the Getty Center bus from Getty Villa and visit both museums in one day. Don’t waste time in line. Make sure you book your tickets to the Getty Center in advance.

Crowds are largest from June to August and on weekends and holidays. Therefore, we recommend avoiding these times, if possible.

But even if you have to visit during peak times, don’t worry—you can avoid most of the crowds by planning your visit in advance. It’s better to prepare for the crowds by knowing what to expect and how to avoid them.
